Erotic Art: pop statuesque and sexy works from Hollywood’s Eric Skotnes

DOWNLOAD CATALOG HERE

His colossal urban murals have broken world records and won prestigious awards, but for Hollywood contemporary artist Eric Skotnes it took a global pandemic to stay indoors and paint for himself. The result: a series of erotic, sensual subjects preserved in a silky glaze of deep tones that celebrate classical nudes with a modern, sexual twist.

Title: “Homage to Bernini”
Medium: Oil on wood panel with varnish finish
Size: 30in × 40in
Series: Unique
Price: $2200

Title: “Hold”
Medium: Oil on wood panel with varnish finish
Size: 48in x 24in
Series: Unique
Price: $2300

Skotnes’ unique oil on panel artworks are “Amplexus”, Latin for “an embrace”, a muscular, voluptuous close-up of intimate poses that magnify the pushing and pulling of skin in the moments of human desire. By using tones of warm cadmium and cool cobalt for his subjects, the emboldening effect eyes over curvy contours and shadows of skin, muscle and grip.

“I thought it was a nice pent-up expression of painting. I’ve always done erotic sketching, but I never showed it, this was a way to,” says Skotnes, who studied illustration and fine art at ArtCenter College of Design. His inspiration of works from Italian Masters never left his fingertips.

“I drew the Sistine Chapel so many times in art school because the way Michelangelo structured, it looked more like a sculpture to me,” says Skotnes. One of his artworks, “Homage to Bernini”, echoes this fascination. “You can really tell when someone is touching someone else in Bernini’s work, you can really see the force.”

Title: “Amplexus”
Medium: Oil on wood

Size: 36in x 36in
Series: Unique
Price: $2300

Title: “Hamatas”
Medium: Oil on wood panel with varnish finish
Size: 48in x 36in
Series: Unique
Price: $2800

Like Caravaggio’s striking spotlight on human figures, or Bernini’s ability to depict flesh from chiseled stone, Skotnes’ is bold in contrast, intensity and mood.

All six artworks are unique, original oil paintings on wood panel with a wet-sanded finish, and are available for sale. Prices includes shipping, tax and overhead payments costs. All artworks are hand signed and come with a certificate of authenticity from the artist.

Title: “Eden”
Medium: Oil on wood panel with varnish finish
Size: 36in x 36in
Series: Unique
Price: $2300

About the artist:

Eric Skotnes is a Los Angeles-based urban artist known for interconnecting disparate styles into an aesthetically integrated whole. Elegantly blending his classical, figurative painting and knowledgeable about art history with a youthful graffiti background, Skotnes creates murals and works on canvas that juxtapose his street style with figural renderings of classical sculptures from antiquity. His unique repertoire of art commissions have been featured in countless blockbuster films and award-winning series. Follow him on Instagram @zoueh_skotnes

Tajan: Another auction success for Max Zorn

Paris Afternoon by Max Zorn sold for triple its price at Tajan Auction House in Paris this month.

Congratulations to Max Zorn for tripling results at the latest Tajan auction in Paris, France, this week. The small piece, “Paris Afternoon” installed in a vintage cigar box depicting a nostalgic Parisian scene, turned out to be a huge hit.

“Paris Afternoon” by Max Zorn was exhibited only once at the Stick Together Gallery booth inside the SCOPE Miami art fair during Art Miami Week last December 2019. The busy booth was a solo showcase of all new Max Zorn artwork, and the pieces sold out before the end of the week. “Paris Afternoon” was a series 10 handmade similar originals for USD1500.

Tajan’s Urban Art auction featured works by Invader, Shepard Fairey, SEEN and others, but Max Zorn’s Paris Afternoon received an exiting bidding war as the numbers escalated. from EUR1000 the bidding inched up in increments of 50 and 100 until finally the hammer price sat at EUR3200 (about USD3800). Bids from online, phone and floor were made.

If you are a collector that was lucky enough to receive a Paris Afternoon this year, congratulations on your investment, its value increased 150 percent!

Digard Auction: Big hammer price for Max Zorn

Max Zorn

Days Like Leaves on a River by Max Zorn premiered at SCOPE Miami Beach in 2019, a sold out series of 6, one was sold for EUR8000 at Digard Auction. House in Paris.

Max Zorn’s artwork “Days Like Leaves On A River” recently sold for a high markup at an auction house in Paris this month. This was the featured artwork used to advertise Zorn’s solo booth exhibition at SCOPE Miami on South Beach last December during Art Miami Week. There were five handmade in total for the series, all were sold within a week’s time for USD6500.

The auction house in Paris, Digard, was able to put the last of this series in its auction June 23, 2020. We were surprised to see it, and we knew demand for this piece was high. The hammer price ended at EUR8000 (about USD9500), a near 50% markup from the original price.

Congratulations to this hard-working artist that never takes a break and is reaping the benefits with a positive market presence. And to the Max Zorn collectors: invest!

SOLD OUT: MAX ZORN SCOPE MIAMI

Stick Together sold out their entire booth that solo showcased all new artwork by tape art master Max Zorn at SCOPE Miami art fair this December, 2019. Not just that, but Zorn has a waitlist stretching into August 2020 as he creates artwork orders solely from the SCOPE Miami exhibition. That means Stick Together Gallery sold out Max Zorn’s entire exhibition about five times over. This marks the fifth consecutive year of the Stick Together Gallery solo exhibiting Max Zorn tape art in Miami and selling out entirely.

Thanks to everyone who came through and gave their time, interested and attention to the Stick Together Gallery booth and Max Zorn tape art. It’s an absolute honor.

Tajan auction house hits new hammer price for Max Zorn

Max Zorn preview show this summer. Auction results have shown that Zorn’s artworks have demand in the secondary market. Empire of Glass sold last year for EUR4500, its original sale less than a year before in Miami for EUR3800.

Tajan Fine Art‘s latest urban art auction this month ended with another market shift increase for Max Zorn artworks. Originally exhibited at an Amsterdam show in 2015, a 50cm x 70cm unique work sold on the second market for a price three times higher than its original sale.

“I remember that artwork selling to a collector for a certain price, and was amused to see it pop up in the latest Tajan catalog with a high reserve price,” said Audrey Sykes, owner of Stick Together Gallery where Max Zorn is their primary house artist. “It was a beautiful bid, and accurately reflects the Max Zorn primary and secondary market.”

Max Zorn is an artist who uses packing tape as a medium that, when illuminated, reveals subjects and settings with sepia-tones and nostalgic emotion. In the art market, Zorn has seen a steady increase in prices of 20 percent per year on average since Zorn’s first show with Stick Together in Amsterdam, summer 2012. Sykes says the important goal to remember is making sure the entire market demand is met.

“Max Zorn seven years ago was not selling large unique pieces for third-thousand dollars like he is today, but nevertheless he provides artworks in all sizes and series to maintain options for collectors with small, medium and large-scale budgets,” said Sykes.

Max Zorn price points vary depending on size, detail, and uniqueness. His “similar originals” create a wide market, while some pieces will be one-of-a-kind, other will be handmade similar originals of 5 or 10 series for example. “Still handmade, still unique, but more than one will be created on demand to help lower the price.”

“The most important thing for any collector to remember when putting a Max Zorn artwork on auction is to make sure the photo is taken when the artwork is illuminated,” said Sykes. “Why on earth some photos are featuring Max’s work without a light is shocking. Even more shocking is that they still seem to sell.”

Max Zorn set to exhibit at Russia’s largest private museum of contemporary art 2022

Tape artist Max Zorn has officially signed off on a solo exhibit with ERARTA – the largest private museum of contemporary art in Russia, located in Saint Petersburg. This three-month show features 25 large Zorn artworks over thee feet in size up to 10-feet triptychs, and a digital arm of making-of videos connected to particular works.

“It will be a combination of unique artworks I’ve already created for collectors, and new pieces I have to create on a large, detailed scale. That will take quite some time, in fact I’m already starting,” says Zorn, who has until April 2022 before the grand opening. Plenty of time to prepare, but still a tight schedule for an artist constantly sold out and booked with commissions.

The contract comes after Zorn’s fourth consecutive sell-out exhibition booth during Art Basel Miami week represented by the Stick Together Gallery. ERARTA Executive Manager Vadim Varvarin approached Stick Together’s booth at SCOPE Miami 2018 with an interest in a possible future between Max Zorn tape art and a curated museum show at ERARTA (a not to “era of art”). This September the concept became a signed agreement.

“It’s every artist’s dream to create a solo show for an art museum, and Max has worked harder than anyone I know to get there,” says Audrey Sykes, owner of Stick Together Gallery. The title of the exhibition: “City Lights”. Sykes says it’s a nod to Zorn’s path from street artist to success story.

“If it weren’t for Europe’s city lights, Max Zorn might have never existed as we know him in art.”

Max Zorn is an artist who uses only brown and colored packing tape as his medium. He applies layers on acrylic glass and shapes them with a scalpel as light from behind illuminates a nostalgic subject and setting.

“Erarta is the brainchild of Marina Varvarina, a low-profile businesswoman with a doctorate in mathematics,” wrote The Huffington Post. According to Wikipedia, in August 2019, the Erarta collection holds 2,800 works by over 300 artists, making it the biggest contemporary art museum in Russia. The collection includes paintings, sculpture, installations, and other medium artworks.

Stick Together holds private summer show for VIP collectors

Audrey Sykes explains the process of creation to the Stick Together collector’s dinner. Photo by Axel Jusseit.

On Saturday, September 7, Stick Together Gallery hosted a VIP private viewing dinner for a collection of philanthropists arriving from countries throughout Europe. Dinner ticket proceeds went to The RAW Project – a Miami-based non profit bringing top international artists to better learning environments at underfunded public schools through art.

“The goal was to premiere new work while raising enough donations to cover the cost of artist accommodation for the upcoming RAW project in Miami this Art Basel week in December,” said Audrey Sykes, owner of Stick Together. “We not only hit our target goal, but we sold a few pieces along the way.”

Among the artworks previewed to a group of about 25 collectors were Max Zorn, Kevin Ledo, Shepard Fairey, Otto Schade, and Mr. Brainwash — most of whom are artists who have already worked with The RAW Project in the past.

Stick Together a guest docent for Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum

This summer Stick Together gallery owner Audrey Sykes was an invited docent and private guide for the Netherlands National Gallery – Rijksmuseum – and the Vincent Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Sykes and guests in the Gallery of Honor holding the largest collection of Dutch Masters artworks, including Rembrandt van Rijn, Frans Hals, and Johannes Vermeer.

The invitation followed from Sykes’ published guidebook to Amsterdam, a 400-page MOON guidebook contracted under Hatchette Publishing, the third largest trade and educational book publisher in the world.

In addition to being a guest on Apple’s Postcard Academy podcasts (below), Sykes’ experience in the art world and expertise in Dutch 17th Century art and French impressionism led to an invitation to perform 2 hour guided tours through the most prestigious and visited museum in the country.

“Audrey was knowledgeable, bright, engaging and passionate in sharing information about each painting. Her insight about Van Gaugh’s view of his landscape was captivating. We looked at brush strokes as if he was sharing a personal perspective with us. The works of Vincent will never look the same again,” wrote one visitor. “She mixed just the right amount of history and art appreciation in both museums. Her extensive knowledge and conversational way of sharing was spot on, we learned so much.”

Why accept the invitation? Sykes said it was a flattering gesture, and a great activity to get away from her day to day art dealings.

“I think it’s important to educate people who want to learn about art as much as possible, and from both a digestible and approachable angle,” said Sykes. “There’s more latitude in an art museum experience than just snapping photos.”

SOLD OUT: Stick Together at SCOPE Miami

“Stick Together Gallery sold out their entire collection of Max Zorn’s works on the opening day and were able to sell the entire booth 3x over by the end of the show.”

Many people don’t know this but the first Miami Basel show Max Zorn ever had in Miami was at Wood Tavern — right off 2nd in Wynwood. It’s a place always packed outside, but we hung his work inside on the walls of this tiny room that acts more as a hallway than a hangout. With no expectations we showed whatever we had, and sure enough I was getting phone calls at one in the morning from collectors drawn to the light and ready to buy. After that weekend we knew Miami was a market for Max Zorn, and it’s only grown from there.

That was 2013, and some of my favorite collectors who still come through our booth are the OGs who supported Max as an emerging artist, before the auctions, before the media attention and before the sold out booths. (Hi Kelly!)

“OUTSTANDING ATTENDANCE, SOLD OUT BOOTHS AND SALES FUELED BY NEW CONTEMPORARY GALLERIES, PROJECTS, AND VIP PROGRAMMING”

As someone who sells art diffusing the lines of urban and contemporary while keeping a clever edge, SCOPE felt like a good fit. The week was busy, and after the first VIP night we sold nearly the entire booth. This would be our 5th year exhibiting at a fair in Miami during Basel, and the 5th year Max sold out the entire booth.

For me personally, it market the 20th art fair I’ve exhibited at since 2012. And while my job has brought me across the world to art fairs form Hong Kong to London, nothing can compare to the buzz and chaotic beauty of Art Basel Miami week.

Thanks to all the collectors, friends and artists who came through and showed their support. See you in December!

SOLD OUT! Stick Together sells entire Max Zorn exhibit at Aqua Art Miami (again)

We did it again: Stick Together Gallery sold out an entire exhibition of new work by Max Zorn for the second year in a row at the 2017 Aqua Art Fair on South Beach during Art Miami Week, totaling sales at over $100k and taking commissions and orders enough to keep Max Zorn booked well into 2018.

This was the third year in a row Stick Together has sold its entire Max Zorn collection while showing the artist during Art Miami Week. Collectors flew from New York to Dallas specifically to see and buy from Zorn’s 2018 collection, including VIPs such as Florida House of Representatives David Silvers, professional golfer Brad Faxon, and Matthew Altman from reality tv show Million Dollar Listing. Notable repeat collectors like the art board of the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh and Hard Rock Cafe curators also purchased pieces from the new collection, and all works were sold by closing Sunday. Artists like stencils Logan Hicks, denim artist Ian Berry and Dutch geometric genius Mr June showed up to say hello and snap photos of the exhibition and selfies with Max, who presented live demonstrations throughout the week.

Thanks to the incredibly hard-working Aqua Art Miami team, and the mastermind Max Zorn, for another incredibly successful show during the whirlwind of Art Miami Week.

So happy to see @maxzornstreetart. I had emailed him years ago but haven’t kept up on his works. All of his work is created with packing tape and an exact I blade. I can appreciate the use of crude materials to make refined work Was such a delight to see everything that he’s done. Two of our favorite pieces were the pieces that were set inside the @fermettemarbeuf restaurant. @thelorizimmer and I had visited the restaurant this year when we were in Paris and we were blown away by the location. The restaurant itself was built in 1890’s but had been forgotten when they built a facade over the interior. It was only re discovered in the 60’s. I will be doing a piece myself of the interior of this restaurant bit max beat me to being the first

Kevin Ledo comes to Stick Together with his RED series

Kevin ledo, stick together artwork, Canada art

“Coming Together”
Medium: acrylic and gold leaf on canvas
SOLD

Observant, patient, and down to earth, somehow Kevin Ledo is still an artist with a boldness hard to miss. His round-the-world schedule has him in demand for painting massive murals from Lebanon to his hometown Montreal (his nine-story Leonard Cohen portrait is world-record worthy to say the least), while still finding time to enrich his artistic talent on canvas. Diligence and focus has led to a striking series of subjects confined within golden lines in feminine or masculine form. With a color scheme filtering a hint of retro seductiveness, his moody subjects seem to captivate its spectator.

Welcome Kevin Ledo to Stick Together Gallery.

Stick Together to premiere new Max Zorn collection at Aqua Art Miami

As we enter our fifth year showing during Art Miami Week, Stick Together is proud to arrive at the biggest and most buzzing week in the art world with an exclusive solo premiere of Max Zorn’s 2018 new collection. After a double sold out show last year, Stick Together has been invited back to Aqua Art Miami –1530 Collins Ave — a sister fair to Art Miami set on South Beach just blocks away from Art Basel Miami. The intimate setting is what a true Miami show should offer: a classy setting, breezy atmosphere, and unique works under dazzling Art Deco architecture and rustling palm trees. Max Zorn will be present and performing live demonstrations throughout the fair inside the booth. Dean Zeus Colman sells big, returns to London’s Moniker Art Fair

Dean Zeus Colman returned to the Frieze London art fair scene this weekend as Stick Together debuted at Moniker a new concept of his, Artopoly. Zeus sold complete Artopoly sets, prints, canvases, and a number of editions from his rocket lolly statue series. The Artopoly showpiece was one of the most photographed works at Moniker, with social media shares reaching the eyes of some of the artists on the Artopoly board itself (Tracey Emin rumored to apparently happy she’s not on the first block!)

Placed in the frame of iconic Monopoly, artists are the properties for sale, auction houses are the railroads, and the board as a whole is transformed into an art market on display. “Just bidding”, pass “Ego”, or “Go to Auction” are some ways how Artopoly playful imitates the familiar game with an ironic and witty twist at every corner. Artist placement on the board is decided from an actual scale of auction results thoroughly researched by the artist and set within the UK contemporary art market history.
